The rats followed, surging over one another and up the Machine’s seams, chomping at his tail. Oleo reached the tongue’s edge and leapt. His teeth caught high on the chain, his haunch striking Dusty as a wave of rats poured over the edge into the pit of blades.

SHNK!squee!SKSH!eek!SHLP!skreee! SHKWRT!eeee!SHLG!

The sound—a metallic chewing of meat and bone, high-pitched gurgles and grinding—was the worst he’d ever heard. The remaining rats heard their dying siblings and skittered back down the tongue toward the safety of the factory floor.

Beside Oleo’s tail, Dusty’s teeth slipped from the chain and dropped into the pit. He squeezed his eyes shut, expecting to hear that same wet crunching sound mixed with Dusty’s screams.

But the blades had fallen silent.

And the Machine …
